The Shipito for Business API connects your store or order system directly to our warehouses. Your system can send shipping instructions, get live shipping quotes, request consolidation, and pull back tracking numbers automatically, so nobody re-types orders by hand. It uses standard HTTPS and JSON, and access is included with every Shipito for Business membership.
If you're looking to streamline your store's processes, an ecommerce fulfillment API (application programming interface, a way for two software systems to talk to each other) might just do the trick.

What manual-entry problem does an API solve?
If your business is booming, chances are you're quickly outgrowing the tedious system of manually entering orders. When you were just starting out, manual entry was manageable and even gave you a sense of control. Each order felt like a glimpse of success.
But now that you're thriving, copying order details into a portal and updating tracking details after the fact can feel overwhelming and repetitive. For your business to step up to the next level, you can't let your team get bogged down by redundant admin work. You still need a system, but you don't have to run it by hand when you can automate order fulfillment.
With API integration, you can:
- Prevent typing errors in your order data
- Avoid delayed shipments
- Pull tracking details back automatically
Fixing these small but significant failure points saves time, increases productivity, and builds your store's credibility.
What does the Shipito API actually do?
If you're still unclear about what an API does for your store, here are the building blocks of the Shipito for Business API, as described in our API documentation:
- Shipping quotes: Get the shipping options and your actual discounted cost to any address, based on weight, size, and value.
- Package creation: Tell us a package is on its way, tagged with your own order or reference number.
- Mail-out requests: Send shipping instructions so the package ships as soon as it's ready.
- Consolidation: Combine several packages into one shipment to cut postage.
- Status and tracking: Pull the latest status, carrier tracking number, tracking link, and tracking events.
- Cancellations: Cancel a package, a mail-out, or a consolidation before the warehouse processes it.
Creating packages and shipping instructions
When a customer orders from your store, your system can send the details to us instead of someone logging and processing each one by hand. Each package carries your own reference number, so you can match it to the order in your system. Include shipping instructions, and the package ships as soon as it's ready.
Order status and tracking retrieval
Once a package is on its way, your system can ask the API for its status and tracking details at any time. That lets you show customers whether an order has shipped, where it is, and the carrier's tracking link. This is convenient for high-volume stores, and helpful for smaller ones too, since automation cuts manual checks.
Checking for updates
The Shipito API works on request. Your system asks for updates, a method called polling, and gets the latest status back. How often you check depends on the size and type of your business.
Customs, insurance, and dangerous goods
The item details you send are used on all customs forms for the package. Some destinations need more: an HS code (a standard product classification number) for the EU, UK, Japan, Switzerland, and Norway, and a tax ID for Brazil and Korea. You can also add insurance and declare dangerous goods through the same request.
How do returns work with the API?
An efficient return process helps you decide whether a customer gets a refund, repair, or replacement. Returns run through Shipito business returns: customers send items to our Oregon warehouse, where we inspect, photograph, repackage, and reroute them. Items still in saleable condition can go out to your next buyer. Standard processing costs $4 per package, and advanced processing costs $8.
Who needs API access?
Now that you know what API order automation can do, do you really need it for your business?
For sellers doing a handful of orders a month, the Shopify app or a manual dashboard may be all you need. Once your order volume or number of sales channels grows, an ecommerce fulfillment API helps you keep up. The Shipito API is built for businesses that sell through their own website. Be honest about where you are and where you want to go.
Should you use the Shopify app or the full API?
- Shopify app: Ready-made and no code needed. Orders flow to our warehouse automatically, and inventory syncs with your store. Pick and pack costs $3 per item, and inventory setup costs $15 per half hour.
- Full API: Built for custom workflows, like high-volume stores or several sales channels feeding one fulfillment operation. Your developers write the integration, or we build it for you.
The Shipito Shopify app is great for businesses still finding their footing. Sellers with little or no coding experience benefit most, since it's plug-and-play and needs no web development.
A full API integration takes development work to build and maintain. If you don't have in-house programmers, our API team can build a custom solution for you, with additional support starting at $150 per hour.
Which membership tier do you need?
Any tier works. Shipito for Business costs $99 per year or $12 per month and has four levels: Standard, Starter, Growth, and Enterprise. Every level includes full API access and the Shopify app. Your level depends only on how many packages you ship each month, and it changes your processing fees and shipping discounts, not your access to integrations.
How do you get started?
- Join Shipito for Business: Any membership level includes API access.
- Get your API credentials: Each account has its own API user name and API key, which your system sends with every request.
- Review the documentation: Our API documentation covers every method, field, and error code.
- Test first: Build and test against our separate test environment before switching to live orders.
- Go live: Point your system at the live address and start sending packages.

FAQ
What features are included in the Shipito for Business API?
The API gives you on-demand shipping rates across multiple carriers, consolidation of several packages into one shipment, address verification, insurance options, customs forms and documentation, and dangerous goods handling. You can also create packages with your own reference numbers, send mail-out instructions, cancel requests, and pull back real-time status and tracking information.
Do I need a big business to use API integration?
Not necessarily. There is no minimum size, and every Shipito for Business level includes API access. Larger businesses tend to benefit more, since they often need custom builds and automation to keep up with order volume. Smaller sellers with only a handful of orders a month may find the Shopify app or manual fulfillment simpler to start with.
Do I need a business account for the Shipito API?
Yes. You need a Shipito for Business membership, which costs $99 per year or $12 per month. You don't need to own a registered company to sign up. Once your account is set up, you get your API credentials and access to the API documentation, which explains the methods, authentication, and examples.
Are there minimum shipping requirements to use the Shipito API?
No. There are no monthly shipping minimums to access the Shipito for Business API. It's available to all Shipito for Business members, from the Standard level up. It's intended for businesses selling products through their own website, and your monthly volume only affects your processing fees and shipping discounts.
How do API errors show up?
Every response tells you whether the request worked. If it didn't, the response includes an error code and a message, such as missing API credentials, a missing or invalid field, a reference number that wasn't found, or no shipping methods available for an address. Your system can read these codes and flag the order for a person to fix.
Should I connect my store to a 3PL?
Connecting to a third-party logistics (3PL) provider like Shipito is an efficient way to handle warehousing, packing, and shipping. If you're selling globally, handling a growing number of orders each month, or running out of space, a 3PL lets you focus on your business. See our guide to 3PL costs and when it pays.
Make an informed choice for your business
Getting an ecommerce fulfillment API might sound like a daunting step. However, once you've recognized its benefits, API integration could be one of the best decisions you make. Consider what your business really needs and be honest about where you stand, so you can make a thoughtful, informed choice.
