Package consolidation means combining several U.S. orders that arrive at the same Shipito warehouse into one box, so you pay for one international shipment instead of many. It is usually the biggest single way to lower your total shipping cost, because every separate box pays its own base charge, fees, and surcharges. Consolidating can save you up to 80% on shipping.

Thanks to package forwarding services, you no longer have to wish you had that pair of limited-edition sneakers or that plush, queen-sized velvet blanket from a U.S. brand that doesn't ship internationally. You can actually have it!

While getting and having is fun, paying isn't. When the good stuff has to sail or fly across the globe to get to you, you know the costs can be high. Fortunately, we offer a package consolidation service at Shipito.

The year is about to end, and the holidays are around the corner. You're probably already planning gifts for your loved ones and yourself. Let's talk about finding the cheapest way to ship multiple packages internationally.

What is package consolidation?

Package consolidation (Shipito also calls it "combine") is when we take your smaller packages and put them together into one box. You shop from as many U.S. stores as you like, send everything to your Shipito address, and we ship it to you as a single package.

Here is a quick side-by-side look:

  • Shipping four packages separately: four base charges, four sets of handling fees and fuel surcharges, and four tracking numbers to watch.
  • Consolidating four packages: one base charge, one set of surcharges, one tracking number, plus a small consolidation fee for each package ($5.50 per package on a Free Account, $3.25 per package for Premium Members).

So for four packages, you pay $22 in consolidation fees on a Free Account, or $13 as a Premium Member, and then just one international shipping charge.

Why does shipping four boxes cost more than one bigger box?

When you shop online, the price of your new dress, bag, or gadget is usually the least jaw-dropping part of the whole ordeal.

Every shipment has a base charge, which depends on the carrier you choose. International shipping hits you hardest on the first few pounds and inches of each package. In other words, one big box usually costs way less to ship than a bunch of little ones.

Carriers also don't just look at your package's weight. They consider how much space it takes up, too. This is called dimensional weight (or "dim weight"): a price based on the size of the box, not just how heavy it is. After all, planes and shipping containers have limited space.

On top of that, there are fuel surcharges and handling fees for each package. Fuel surcharges are an extra percentage that carriers add to every shipment, and they change often. UPS, for example, updates its fuel surcharges every week. When you pay them once instead of four times, that adds up fast.

Want to see the difference for your own country? Try a few weights in our shipping calculator. Compare the cost of one small package times four with the cost of one bigger package. The gap is usually big.

What does repacking add on top of consolidation?

You don't have to stop at consolidation. With Shipito, you can take it a step further with repacking. Repacking means we remove retail boxes, void fill (the paper, air pillows, and foam inside boxes), and other packaging that adds to dimensional weight. Then, we pack everything into an efficient, space-saving box.

When you place a consolidation request, you choose one of three packing options:

  • Keep outside box: we pack the boxes we received into a larger box.
  • Keep retail packaging: we throw away the outer shipping boxes and repack the retail packaging into a single box.
  • Product only: the original packaging is thrown away, and only the products are packed.

For instance, when you buy a Dyson Airwrap and it comes in a box with excess padding, you pay to ship air. The same applies to Apple AirPods. You know those charging cases are way smaller than the outer packaging they arrive in. Repacking reduces wasted space, lowers international shipping costs, and makes it easier to combine multiple purchases into one shipment.

Of course, repacking isn't always the answer. Sometimes, keeping the original packaging is straight-up smarter, especially for high-tech gadgets or anything that feels like a splurge. After all, void fill is designed to protect products from bumps, drops, or whatever chaos a long trip might throw their way. Also, warranties may require shipping in the original box.

Here are some questions you can ask yourself to decide if you should repack:

  • Is this item fragile or high-value? If yes, leave it in its original packaging. Protection outweighs savings.
  • Is the original packaging flimsy or worn out? If yes, you might as well pack it in a sturdier box with other products and proper cushioning.
  • Does the manufacturer require the original packaging for warranty claims or returns? If yes, keep it. Note that warranties are usually country-specific, meaning you might not be able to use it outside the United States.
  • Will the packaging make it hard to handle or store during shipping? If yes, consider a repack.

You can also add extra protection to your consolidation, like extra bubble wrap ($2 for Premium Members, $4 for Free Accounts). For more tips on delicate items, read our guide on how to ship fragile items internationally.

At Shipito, our team is happy to help you decide when a repack is worth it. If you choose to repack an item that we believe could be damaged without its original packaging, we'll let you know. Count on us to help you get the most out of package consolidation for international shipping.

How long can Shipito store your packages before you consolidate?

Unfortunately, there's a hitch: you cannot store your items forever. Free storage is what gives you time to collect several orders before you ship. Here is how long you get:

  • Free Account: up to 7 days of free storage.
  • Premium Membership: 45 days of free storage, and more at higher Shipito Member Rewards levels.
  • After free storage ends: an expired package costs $7 plus $1 for each day it is past its storage date.

One important detail: when you consolidate, the new box keeps the storage time of the oldest package in the group. So the clock starts with your first purchase, not your last.

For example, say a package from your Prime Big Deal Days haul arrives in mid-October. As a Premium Member, its 45 days of free storage run until about the end of November. That covers Black Friday (November 27, 2026) and Cyber Monday (November 30). But if you plan an all-out shopping spree on Super Saturday in December, those October scores might be staring at an eviction notice.

The point is to shop the whole sale season, but don't forget about the storage deadlines. Plan your purchases around those windows, so you can consolidate your packages and ship only once. Compare plans on our pricing page, and if you are shopping Amazon, our Prime Big Deal Days guide walks you through it.

Does consolidation reduce customs charges?

Not really. Consolidation saves on shipping costs, but it does not change the value of your goods, so the duties you pay on the items themselves usually stay the same.

Every international shipment goes through customs. Customs protects a country's revenue, keeps people safe, and manages the goods crossing its borders. Duties (also called tariffs) are taxes on imported goods. They are usually based on the value of the products, and sometimes shipping and insurance too. Some countries calculate duties differently, like by weight or quantity, but the rate is tied to the product's HS code (Harmonized System code, a number that tells customs what kind of product it is).

Besides duties, you might also pay import taxes like VAT or GST. These are sales taxes on imports, calculated on the total value of the goods, often including shipping, insurance, and duties.

There is one thing to watch. Many countries have a de minimis limit: a value below which you pay little or no duty or tax. When you combine several small orders into one box, the total value is higher, and it can go over that limit. For example:

  • Australia and New Zealand: Shipito collects GST when you ship goods valued at $1,000 AUD (or $1,000 NZD) or less.
  • China: a personal shipment with more than one item has an import limit of 1,000 CNY.
  • Leaving the U.S.: a package worth more than $2,500 needs an extra export filing (an EEI), so we recommend keeping each package under that value.

Before you consolidate expensive items, check your country's rules. Learn more in Do I Pay Duties on U.S. Packages?, our post on de minimis for shipments into the EU, and our customs FAQ.

How do you consolidate your packages with Shipito?

So far, we've made four things clear: consolidating your packages cuts shipping costs, repacking makes your consolidation even better, the storage window tells you how much time you have, and consolidation does not lower duties on its own. Now, let's show you how to combine packages to save on shipping with Shipito.

You start by signing up for an account. No matter which plan you choose, you get a free U.S. address and free package storage. For frequent shoppers, we recommend a Premium Membership, because it gives you lower consolidation fees and much longer free storage. You can see how Shipito works step by step.

Once your account is active, follow these steps.

Step 1: Shop online

Go ahead and add those nice products to your cart from as many U.S. stores as you like. Buy a Kindle Paperwhite or a Yeti Rambler in every color during the big October sales. Shop to your heart's content!

Step 2: Ship to your Shipito warehouse address

Whatever and wherever you buy, ship to the U.S. address in your Shipito account. Always include your unique suite number, so our team can quickly match your packages to you when they arrive at our warehouse. From there, we store them for free for as long as your plan allows.

Step 3: Fill out the customs declaration

When a package arrives, complete its customs declaration form in your account. This is a short list of what is inside and what it is worth, in U.S. dollars. You need a customs declaration for every package you want to consolidate.

Step 4: Shop some more

Is it finally Black Friday or Cyber Monday? Shop some more! Get those new headphones, a game console, and any other must-haves like clothes, shoes, and beauty products. Now is the time to get all the gifts on your list. Ship everything to the same Shipito address, and fill out a customs declaration for each new package.

Step 5: Check your package photos

We take 1 to 3 photos of the outside of every package we receive, so you can see that everything arrived. Want to see what is inside? You can order content photos for a small fee.

Step 6: Place your consolidation request

Once all your packages have arrived, select them in your account and place a consolidation (combine) request. All the packages must be in the same warehouse.

Step 7: Choose your packing options

Pick "Keep outside box," "Keep retail packaging," or "Product only," and add extras like extra bubble wrap if you need them. We usually finish consolidation requests within 2 business days.

Step 8: Choose your carrier and ship

When your new box is ready, you'll see the shipping rates for its final size and weight. Choose your carrier, pay, and we'll send your treasure box on its way. It will be at your door before you know it.

When should you NOT consolidate?

We swear by the benefits of package consolidation for international shipping, but it's not always the best choice. No matter how much you want to save money, some packages are better shipped separately.

  • One urgent item: Is a wedding coming up, and those heels and that dress have to be there on time? Just ship it right away.
  • Fragile goods: Again, protection outweighs savings. It's better to spend a little extra on shipping than risk damage.
  • Items with different restrictions: If one product needs special handling, extra documents, or carrier approval (for example, items with batteries), combining it with other items can delay the whole shipment. Check our prohibited items list first.
  • Items near a storage deadline: If you have to pay for extra days of storage, are you really saving money? Separate shipments may be cheaper than waiting.
  • A total value over your country's limit: If combining pushes your box over a duty-free limit, splitting it may cost less in taxes.

FAQ

What is package consolidation?

Package consolidation is a service where a package forwarder combines several of your online orders into one box before shipping them abroad. At Shipito, you send all your U.S. purchases to your Shipito address, then place a consolidation (combine) request. We pack everything together, so you pay one international shipping charge instead of one for every package. This can save you up to 80% on shipping.

How much does package consolidation cost at Shipito?

Shipito charges a consolidation fee for each package you combine. It is $5.50 per package on a Free Account and $3.25 per package for Premium Members. So combining four packages costs $22 on a Free Account or $13 for Premium Members. You then pay one international shipping charge for the new box, based on its final size and weight.

How long can Shipito store my packages before I consolidate?

Free Accounts get up to 7 days of free storage. Premium Members get 45 days, and more at higher Shipito Member Rewards levels. After that, an expired package costs $7 plus $1 per day. When you consolidate, the new box keeps the storage time of the oldest package, so plan your shopping around your first purchase.

Does consolidating packages lower customs duties?

Usually not. Duties and import taxes are based on the value of your goods, and consolidation does not change that value. It lowers your shipping cost, not your duties. In some countries, combining orders can push the total value over a duty-free limit, so check your country's rules before you consolidate expensive items.

Can I consolidate packages from different Shipito warehouses?

No. You can only consolidate packages that are in the same warehouse. Shipito has warehouses in California and Oregon in the U.S., in Austria, and in Japan. If you plan to combine orders, ship all of them to the same Shipito address. You also need a customs declaration for every package you want to consolidate.

How long does consolidation take?

Shipito usually processes consolidation requests within 2 business days. Express Consolidation Processing is available for a small fee if you need it faster. Shipping rates for a consolidated package are shown after the consolidation is finished, because the price depends on the final size and weight of the new box. You can estimate it ahead of time with the shipping calculator.
